Ruukki Construction, a subsidiary of SSAB Group, is committed to being the first company to offer its customers fossil-free steel building products. The building products will be made from fossil-free steel based on SSAB’s HYBRIT technology and the plan is to launch them at a commercial scale in the market in 2026. Already before then, Ruukki aims to pilot the use of fossil-free steel together with selected customers.

We are committed to developing our offering to help our customers to reduce carbon emissions, and we will look for customers to partner with to create a fossil-free value chain until the end of the lifecycle of a building,” says Sami Eronen, President of Ruukki Construction.
The use of fossil-free steel is part of Ruukki’s new sustainability strategy, which is divided into three areas: offering, operations and responsible partner.
In sustainable offering and operations, Ruukki can have the greatest impact on reducing carbon emissions. The use of fossil-free steel in our offering will reduce carbon emissions for these products by around 85%. In addition, our energy-efficient envelope solutions can reduce energy consumption by up to 30% during the lifecycle of the building. In our own operations, we aim to further reduce carbon emissions by 25% by 2026.
Steel, being a base material for Ruukki’s products such as sandwich panels and facade claddings, is one of the very few materials that can be recycled in 100% without deteriorating its properties. A choice of steel-based components is a sustainable choice. Ruukki has environmental product declarations for its products, where their life cycle environmental impact is presented in detail.
Wall and roof envelope products from Ruukki, based on highly durable steel and high-quality organic coatings, reduce the maintenance and repair needs and are delivered with warranties up to 50 years. Our versatile and complete offer including products for external walls, internal walls, ceilings, and roofs enables customers to build their production halls, logistics centers, warehouses, or offices in cooperation with one building envelope supplier – Ruukki.
